Chemical apparatus

It is really very important that you select the correct apparatus for the correct measurement. For instance you can take a measuring cylinder or a pipette to measure a volume. However if it is an accurate volume like 20.0 ml you cannot use a measuring cylinder from which you can measure only 20 ml approximately.

lets look at some of the important apparatus we use in a laboratory for taking measurements

1. Burette

Burette is a highly accurate (upto two decimal points) apparatus used to measure volumes. mainly burettes are used for titrations. Solution with the unknown concentration is usually loaded to a burette.

2. Pippete

Pippet is used to take an accurate but fixed volume of a liquid. If you are asked to measure 50.0 ml of a solution pippete is the apparatus you should use.

3. Measuring cylinder

Measuring cylinders are used to measure volumes with lesser accuracy. e.g 2 ml

4. Gas Syringer

If the measurement is of a gas a gas syringe is used. Mouth of the gas syringe is fixed tightly  to the setup where a gas is evolving and collected.

Questions:

1. Name the suitable apparatus to measure the following

a. 10 ml of Copper Sulphate solution
b.Carbon dioxide gas evolved with time in an experiment
c. Measure 20.00 ml of Hydrochloric acid in to a conical flask
d. Find the volume of Sodium hydroxide solution completely reacting with 10.00ml of 1M hydrochloric solution in an titration experiment.
